Good to know before visiting Budapest

There are a lot of things what are good to know about Budapest, if you’ll have a vacation here. The city has a fairytale architecture, a terrifying history, cheap drinks and admirable love of pepper and goulash! It’s affordable, safe and easy to get around in the city. Otherwise, Budapest is one of the most developing cities in Europe, so it’s absolutely worth visiting! If you come to the hungarian capital city, you should know that it’s easy to mix up Budapest and Bucharest (what is the capital of Romania), because of their similar names. We have one of the hardest languages of the world, but believe us: if you learn some easy hungarian phrases, the hungarian people will give you big smiles. Our website will help you!

When you arrive…

Upon your arrival you have to be careful with the taxis, because some drivers may trick with the price and the taximeter, especially at the airport. Otherwise these airport taxis are extremely expensive, so it would be the better to book a transfer from the airport/ train station to your accommodation. It’s much more cheaper, faster and safer.

If you prefer public transport the ’200E’ bus is always starting from the airport, so you can get to the center with its help in 70-80 minutes.

NEVER CHANGE YOUR MONEY AT BUDAPEST AIRPORT!

The Interchange office at the airport is using extreme high fees, 60-70% higher than other exchange offices!

The metro line 1-2-3-4, the tram line 1, 4-6, 47 and 49 are the most used lines around the centre. It’s important, that our metro line 3 is under reconstruction now, so you have to take replacement buses from the Lehel square to Újpest.

If you need a taxi anywhere in the city, just take into consideration that it’s better to call a cab instead of sit in some random yellow car: because calling is totally safe, and you know the tariffs, too! If you’ll drive to Budapest, you should know that you have to pay for the parking places during the day, except the weekends and holidays. After eight in the evenings it’s also free of charge to park, until 8 am.

You can rent a car or cycle

You can also rent cars for affordable prices, for example there is the GreenGo, or the MOL Limo service. If you would like to see Budapest on a cycle, there is an option to hire bikes, too! These (green) bicycles’ names are MOL Bubi, you can find them at almost every big metro station, park and popular square.

About public transport

You can get your pass or ticket for the travelling from the ticket automats, or there are ticket-desks at the bigger stations. Single tickets are also available! One ticket costs 350 forints (about 1 euro). It’s good to know that you can transfer from one of the metro lines to another with the same ticket, but if you have to change the metro to a bus, or a tram, you have to buy another ticket for the transfer!

About the Hungarian

We’ll be honest with you: the Hungarian people are usually not so talkative, but of course, if you needed some help, they would love to guide you. The elderly people usually don’t speak English, but a lot of them openminded. The Hungarian love football, beer and spritzer!

Some easy Hungarian phrases

If you are bored on the plane, don’t hesitate to learn some basic Hungarian words and phrases! We know that it’s hard to pronounce, but in the hotels, restaurants, or shops the people will be pleased, if you try to say some Hungarian words. These are the most used sentences:

Szia! – means Hello, or See you!

Jó reggelt/napot/estét! – Good morning/afternoon/evening!

Köszönöm! – Thank you!

Viszontlátásra! – Goodbye!

Hol van? – Where is?

Egészségedre! – Cheers! (in the pubs)

Mennyibe kerül? – How much?

Egy sört kérek szépen – One beer, please!

You can pay in forints, euros, or by bank card

The local currency is Hungarian forint (HUF), but in a lot of places you can also pay in euros too. If you don’t have forints or euros, don’t worry! Just go the the nearest exchange office – you can find a lot in the center and next to hotels – and you can change your currency to forints. But you can also pay by your card. In any bigger shop euro is accepted, and you can pay for the tickets of sights in EUR, as well.

About smoking

Don’t be surprised, if you won’t get any cigarette in the normal shops. In our country there are tobacco shops, where you can buy the cigarettes, and kids are not allowed to get in these places. The shop assistants can ask for your identity cards here. Another thing is good to know: it’s not allowed to smoke in the restaurants, pubs, night clubs, near schools and at the bus stops or other public transport stations.

The weather

It’s so easy to predict the weather in the summer, but our springs and winters are really surprising. We have the coldest weather in January, the warmest in July. It’s raining a lot in May, June and November. It’s almost always so hot in the summers in Budapest, the winter is sometimes so cold, otherwise it’s a little bit warm, depends on the climate change. The beginning of the spring is usually chilly. So it’s the best if you pack several types of clothes, including raincoat, too!
